PSHCE & RSHE at Ashwell School
What is PSHCE?
At Ashwell School, we believe that Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship and Economic education (PSHCE) is a vital part of every child’s learning. It helps pupils to stay healthy and safe, build positive relationships, develop resilience, and prepare for life and work in modern Britain.
PSHCE also includes the statutory elements of Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE), which all primary schools are required to teach. RSHE focuses on giving children the knowledge and skills to form safe, respectful and healthy relationships, both in person and online, and to understand the changes they will experience as they grow.
How do we teach PSHCE at Ashwell School?
- We follow the Kapow Primary PSHCE Scheme of Work, which provides clear progression and engaging resources from Reception through to Year 6.
- Lessons are taught weekly by class teachers and cover a broad range of themes, such as:
- Families and relationships
- Health and wellbeing
- Citizenship and community
- Safety and the changing body
- Economic wellbeing and aspirations
- Teaching is age-appropriate, builds year on year, and ensures children are well prepared for the next stage of their education.
- The scheme includes opportunities for assessment and reflection, so children can recognise their own progress and achievements.
Curriculum Enrichment
To support our PSHCE curriculum, we celebrate a number of themed weeks and events throughout the year, such as:
- Feeling Good Week
- Anti-Bullying Week
- Diversity Week
- Safer Internet Day
- Road Safety Activities via the Hertfordshire Safe and Active Travel Team
- Y6 trip to the Houses of Parliament
These special events help to deepen pupils’ understanding of key themes, promote a positive school culture, and encourage children to live out the values taught in class.
Working with Parents
We believe that working in partnership with parents is vital. To support this, we provide:
- Clear information about what is taught and when
- Access to policy documents and curriculum overviews
- Opportunities for parents to ask questions or share feedback
Parents also retain the right to withdraw their child from the sex education element of RSHE (other than the compulsory science curriculum).
